Woman Arrested for Poisoning Family Members with Christmas Cake, Three Died

It happened in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The suspect's first husband also died from a "contaminated banana". Authorities now suspect he was also murdered.

A woman was arrested in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, this Sunday, under suspicion of poisoning her family through a Christmas cake, made by her mother-in-law, last December.

According to G1, which cites the police, Deise Moura, who is being held at the Torres Women's Prison, is accused of triple homicide and three attempted homicides.

The case dates back to December 23. Seven people from the same family were gathered in a house, having afternoon coffee, when they began to feel unwell.

Three of them ended up dying, just a few hours apart. While three others were hospitalized.

Authorities soon suspected that it was poisoning, since the only person who had not become ill was the one who had not eaten the cake.

Furthermore, according to the surviving victims, the cake had a "strange", "spicy and unpleasant" flavor.

When the results of the first laboratory analyses arrived, the few remaining doubts ceased to exist. "Arsenic was found in the blood" of at least three victims, an extremely toxic substance that can lead to death.

In light of this, authorities have stepped up investigations. They questioned around 15 people and ended up arresting the suspect who, according to Regional Paulista, "had a long-standing dispute" with her mother-in-law, one of the victims who is in serious condition in hospital.

Also according to this newspaper, Deise's first husband died after eating a "contaminated" banana. Authorities now suspect the suspect was also involved in the death and are preparing to exhume the body on Thursday.
