Military Plane Crash In Sudan Causes At Least 19 Deaths

An Antonov aircraft crashed on Tuesday after taking off from the Wadi Sayidna air base, north of Omdurman, military sources said in a short statement.

The military also said that military personnel and civilians died in the crash, but did not reveal how many. However, the Ministry of Health said that at least 19 people died, adding that the bodies were transferred to a hospital in Omdurman, which also received at least five injured civilians.

Sudan has been in a state of civil war since 2023, when tensions between the military and a paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), escalated.

The fighting has devastated urban areas and been marked by various atrocities, including mass rapes and ethnically motivated killings, which constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity, especially in the western region of Darfur, according to the United Nations and international human rights groups.

The war has intensified in recent months, with the military making constant advances against the RSF in Khartoum and other parts of the country.

The RSF, which controls most of West Darfur, said it had shot down a military aircraft on Monday in Nyala, the provincial capital of South Darfur.
