India is ready to offer “all possible assistance” to Myanmar (formerly Burma) and Thailand, the Indian Prime Minister said today, after a strong earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale hit the two countries.
India is ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, I have asked our authorities to be available,” said Narendra Modi on the social network X, stressing that he was ‘praying’ for the ‘safety and well-being of all’.
“We have asked our authorities to be on standby,” Modi said, adding that the Indian Foreign Ministry should also ‘remain in touch with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand’.
The United States Geological Survey and Germany's GFZ Geoscience Center said the quake was recorded in Myanmar, formerly Burma, at 13:30 (06:30 in Lisbon), with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale.
A second earthquake shook regions in Thailand 12 minutes later.
Myanmar authorities say a large number of victims have rushed to hospital in the country's capital Naypidaw following an earthquake that struck the country and Thailand.
A hospital official told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that some of the injured were being treated outside the emergency room.
In Myanmar, in the Sagaing region, southwest of Mandalay, a bridge collapsed and some sections of the highway connecting to the city of Yangon were also damaged.
Residents of Yangon fled their homes when the earthquake struck.
In Bangkok, Thailand, at least 43 workers who were in a 30-story building under construction are buried, according to authorities in the Thai capital.
