Pentagon Warns Signal App Is Being Targeted by Russian Hackers

The email, obtained by the NPR website, was sent after the controversy with the app in a chat group with senior Trump administration officials - to which a journalist was added.

The Pentagon has issued a warning regarding the Signal messaging app and has indicated that use by members of the US government should be avoided.

The warning comes after controversy within the Trump administration led senior officials - such as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth - to discuss attacks against rebels in Yemen in a Signal chat group to which a journalist from The Atlantic had been added.

As NPR reports, the Pentagon's warning was issued this Tuesday, the 25th, and points to the risk of senior Trump administration officials being the target of phishing attacks via Signal.

“A vulnerability has been identified in the Signal messaging application,” reads the email obtained by the publication that was sent by the Pentagon to officials. “Professional hacking groups are using [Signal's] 'associated device' features to spy on encrypted conversations.”

In a statement to NPR, Signal said that the Pentagon's message did not mention security vulnerabilities in the messaging application itself, but rather the risk of phishing attacks on the platform where those responsible seek to gain undue access with someone else's credentials.
