The letter that US President Donald Trump sent to Iran last week, urging the country to negotiate over Iran's nuclear program, included a two-month deadline to reach a new agreement. According to the American media outlet Axios, it is not clear when the countdown begins, whether it is when the letter is received or from the start of the negotiations.
On March 13, Iran said it was "evaluating" the letter.
"The decision on how to respond will be taken after a thorough assessment and investigation," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said in a statement.
The letter was delivered on March 12 by Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.
"Trump made clear to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that he wanted to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program diplomatically, and very soon, and that if that was not possible, there were other ways to resolve the dispute," National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes said.
When Iran confirmed receipt of the letter, the highest political and religious authority of the Islamic Republic considered that Trump invites dialogue in order to be able to say that "Iran refuses to negotiate" and recalled that the Republican abandoned the 2015 nuclear pact in his first term (2017-2021).
