Gambling houses allow betting on the successor to Francis, who died on Monday, and the name he will choose as pope, with Italian Pietro Parolin and Filipino Luis Antonio Tagle the favorites.
Parolin heads the diplomacy of the Holy See, the government of the Vatican State, and Tagle heads the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, an institution created more than 400 years ago to promote the reunification of Christians and spread the faith.
On betting sites, the names of the "papa-eligible" cardinals appear next to the corresponding odds, that is, what would be paid for each unit bet if they were elected.
Because they are considered favorites, Parolin and Tagle are the ones who yield the least to potential bettors, according to the EFE news agency.
The Italian is a slight favourite, with odds of 2.75 euros for every euro bet, against 3.20 for Tagle at a Spanish bookmaker.
Next up are Ghanaian Peter Tukson and Italian Matteo Zuppi at odds of 8.00, and Hungarian Peter Erdo at 9.00, who also feature among the top at other betting companies.
In English bookmakers, the birthplace of sports betting, the fight is also between Parolin and Tagle.
Tied on Monday, the day of Francisco's death, at 2.75, Parolin gained favoritism on Tuesday and dropped to 2.5, leaving Tagle at 3.00.
Something that also generates expectation and curiosity is the name that the new pontiff will choose and some bookmakers allow bettors to take the risk of predicting this.
The favorite names at one of the English bookmakers are the last three chosen.
With odds of 2.50, the favorite is Francisco, in what would be a repeat and, thus, would become Francisco II.
Next comes Bento, with odds of 4.00, João Paulo, with odds of 6.00, and Leão, with a prize of R$8.00 for each bet.
Francis, an Argentine national, died on Monday at the age of 88, after a 12-year pontificate.
The burial will be on Saturday. Francis' successor will be chosen from among 135 cardinals gathered in a conclave whose date has yet to be set.
