Three children and two dogs were rescued at the weekend after they had entered the storm water drainage system of a Security-Widefield neighborhood in the US state of Colorado.
Following “an extensive search”, the fire department in the area located the children and the dogs “more than 800 meters from where they had entered” the “labyrinth”.
“Fortunately, in this case, everyone was unharmed,” the rescuers said on the social network Facebook.
However, the authorities pointed out that “children may think it's fun to explore the sewers looking for ninja turtles, but it can be very dangerous and even deadly”.
They therefore warned of “the potential dangers associated with this activity”, including “getting lost underground, hypothermia, rapid weather changes that flood the drainage system (risk of drowning), oxygen deficiency, toxic gases (such as hydrogen sulphide and carbon monoxide) and, of course, animals such as snakes”.
“Please talk to your children about the dangers of playing in and near drains,” they appealed.
