Durban Taxi Shutdown Leaves Commuters Stranded

Durban commuters are facing major disruptions after SANTACO in KwaZulu-Natal launched a two-day taxi shutdown starting from this morning, Thursday, 4 September, following failed talks with the eThekwini Municipality.

The protest, sparked by permit disputes and the impoundment of 25 taxis in Clermont and KwaDabeka, has grounded fleets across all five regional associations in the metro.

SANTACO chairperson Mathula Mkhize said operators felt sidelined by city officials, accusing metro police of unfair enforcement. The shutdown coincides with social grant payment day, deepening the impact on workers, students, and vulnerable residents.

While metro police insist unlicensed taxis will not be tolerated, SANTACO’s leadership has called for fairer processes and direct engagement with decision-makers.

Negotiations with the municipality and provincial officials are expected to continue, but for now Durban’s transport system remains in turmoil.
