The lawsuit was filed today by Fiona Harvey, the woman who claims to be the inspiration behind the streaming platform's success, before a US district court in the central district of California.
The complaint, published by the specialist media outlet Variety, begins by quoting the title of the first episode of the series, directed by and starring Richard Gadd: “This is a true story”.
According to the lawsuit, this is a lie told “out of greed and a desire for fame” and “a lie designed to attract more viewers, gain more attention, make more money and brutally destroy the life of the plaintiff, Fiona Harvey”.
Harvey filed her complaint against Netflix “for defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, gross negligence and violations of the right of publicity,” due to the alleged lies against her in the series and for which she demands at least 170 million dollars in damages.
The 34-page document includes a series of clips and excerpts from the series that are denied or clarified by Fiona Harvey.
'Baby Reindeer' arrived on Netflix in April and tells the story of Gadd, who plays a fictionalized version of himself called Donny Dunn.
Over the course of the seven episodes, Dunn tells of his attempt to make a living from comedy while going through a bad patch in which he is harassed by Martha, a woman he has helped in the past and who sends him thousands of emails while threatening his family and girlfriend.
