The Turkish Navy rescued 19 migrants and eight sunken bodies in Turkish territorial waters in the Aegean Sea, off Izmir, Ankara public television reported today citing official sources.
A helicopter, four vessels and a team of divers deployed to the site were involved in the rescue operation after some migrants were seen on the island of Karaada, near the Turkish port of Bodrum.
Authorities recovered the bodies of eight migrants, according to a statement from Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.
The origin and ages of these migrants have not yet been disclosed.
According to survivors, the group of 27 people - aboard precarious boats - were not helped by the Greek authorities when they were trying to reach Greek territory.
Later, one of the boats sank and some migrants reached Karaada, on the coast of Turkey, by swimming.
