Iran's President-Elect Will Take Office on July 30

The elected President of Iran, the reformist Massoud Pezeshkian, will take office before Parliament on July 30, official sources announced today.

Mokhtaba Yosefi, a member of the Parliament's governing council, announced that Pezeshkian will take office on July 30, once all necessary steps in the process have been completed, ISNA news agency reported.

According to the legislation, the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, must sign the decree approving the election of the President.

"According to the law, the inauguration ceremony of the elected President will take place after the ceremony of handing over the presidential decree (by Khamenei)," said the parliamentarian.

The source stated, a few days ago, that the inauguration would take place between August 4th or 5th.

After taking office, the new President will have around 15 days to propose his ministers to Parliament, which will hold a vote on nominees for government cabinet positions between August and September.

Parliament is currently made up of conservatives and ultraconservatives, following March's legislative elections, in which the Guardian Council vetoed numerous reformist candidates.

Pezeshkian won the second round of the presidential elections last week - with 53.6% of the vote - against the ultra-conservative Saeed Jalili - who obtained 44.3%.

Former Health Minister and 69-year-old parliamentarian, Massoud Pezeshkian will be the ninth President in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran and will succeed the ultra-conservative Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.

During the election campaign, Pezeshkian promised a rapprochement with the West and the relaxation of the obligation to wear the Islamic veil.

The Iranian President has limited decision-making capacity, especially in the areas of Iran's foreign and security policy, where the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, has vast powers.
