China's Foreign Ministry today called on "all parties" involved in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to "reduce tension" in the face of the incursion of Ukrainian forces into Russian territory.
In a statement published on its website, the Chinese diplomatic service called for three principles: "avoid expanding the conflict", "avoid military escalation" and "refrain from fanning the flames of confrontation".
"China will continue to work with the international community to promote a political solution to the crisis," the statement reads.
Russia is fighting for the sixth day in a row against Ukrainian forces who entered the Kursk region on Tuesday, causing a mass exodus of Russians from the border towns.
According to Sunday's figures, at least 84,000 people have left the villages near the Ukrainian border in Kursk in recent days.
Since the beginning of the conflict, China has adopted an ambiguous position on the war in Ukraine, calling for respect for the territorial integrity of all countries, including Ukraine, and respect for the "legitimate security concerns" of all parties, in a reference to Russia.
Beijing has also denied that it has sold arms to Russia and guarantees that it maintains a "normal" trade relationship with Moscow, with which it has intensified its trade in the last two years.
