After almost five decades, US police have managed to ascertain the identity of a man who became known as the ‘Pinnacle Man’.
The unknown man has been identified as Nicolas Grubb, aged 27 and from Fort Washington, Pennsylvania.
His body was found on 16 January 1977 near The Pinnacle on the Appalachian Trail in Albany, Pennsylvania, by two young hikers.
The discovery was made during one of the coldest months on record in the city and the body was, according to the newspapers at the time, completely frozen, reports Sky News.
Despite initial efforts, the body was never claimed and the authorities were slow to identify the victim. An autopsy in 1977 concluded that the man had died of suicide.
The authorities took his fingerprints and tried to identify him through his teeth in 2019. All these attempts proved unsuccessful.
In August this year, the fingerprints were recovered by the police, who this time managed to establish the man's identity in just one hour.
His family has already been contacted and confirmed the information.
