Nine children, a man and a woman ate poisonous mushrooms on Friday night, according to NBC News. The incident took place in Peach Bottom Township, Pennsylvania.
A family of 11, nine of whom were children, had to be hospitalized after eating wild mushrooms found in the woods in Pennsylvania. The incident reportedly occurred after a family member brought them home for dinner.
The 11 people are from an Amish family, a Christian religious group known for its conservative stance and limited use of technology.
A family member reportedly walked half a mile to a pay phone to call for help, according to a fire department spokesperson.
Six ambulances were dispatched and immediately transported the family to the hospital. Since the number of people involved was so high, it was considered a "mass casualty incident," a fire department official said.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the USA warns about the lack of knowledge about possible poisonous mushrooms and that this food should not be eaten when picked in the forest.
