Lebanese Army Responds for First Time to Israeli Attacks

The Lebanese army today responded to an attack by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the first time that regular Lebanese troops have responded to an Israeli offensive in the context of ongoing attacks against the Shiite militia Hezbollah.

The Lebanese armed forces reported that one of their soldiers was killed in an attack "by the Israeli enemy" against military installations in the city of Bint Jbeil, southern Lebanon.

"Members of the [military] center responded to the sources of the shooting," Lebanese military officials said on their official social media profile.

Hours earlier, the Lebanese army had already reported that another of its soldiers had been killed and another injured in an Israeli attack "while carrying out an evacuation and rescue mission" with the participation of the Lebanese Red Cross in the city of Marjayun.

The Israeli army has intensified its offensive against Lebanese territory in recent weeks, although it has always emphasized that its war is not against the country, but against the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah.

Israeli attacks have killed around 2,000 people, including dozens of members of the Iranian-backed group, but also civilians, including around 130 children.

The resurgence of hostilities is part of fighting that has been going on for about a year, after Hezbollah attacked Israeli territory one day after the October 7 offensive by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other Palestinian factions against Israel, in which around 1,200 people died and another 250 were kidnapped.

Israel launched a bloody offensive against the Gaza Strip on the same day, which has already left around 41,800 people dead, according to Hamas.

Hezbollah is part of the so-called "Axis of Resistance", a coalition led by Iran and against Israel, which also includes, among others, the Palestinian extremist group Hamas and the Huthi rebels in Yemen.
