Lula Da Silva Suffers Accident At Home And Cancels Trip To Russia

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva suffered an accident at home, which forced him to cancel a trip to Russia this Sunday, where he was going to participate in a BRICS summit.

According to a statement from the presidential office, cited by Reuters, the Brazilian head of state received medical advice to temporarily avoid long-haul flights, after injuring his head in an accident at home.

A medical report issued by the Sirio Libanes Hospital in Brasilia indicates that Lula "was advised to avoid long-haul air travel", but is able to carry out his regular duties.

The report adds that Lula suffered a laceration on the back of his head.

The website g1 had already reported that the president had been admitted to the hospital with a cut on the back of his neck, which required stitches.

Thus, Lula will participate by videoconference in the meeting of the group of emerging countries, which will be held between October 22 and 24 in the Russian city of Kazan.

The BRICS, whose original members were Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, are expanding after including four more countries this year: Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia.

During the meeting, the leaders of the member countries will define the criteria for other nations to join the bloc as associates.

At the summit, Brazil will assume the leadership of the BRICS for one year, starting on January 1, 2025.

Today's statement from Planalto recalls that "in 2014, during the [previous] Brazilian presidency of the BRICS, the New Development Bank and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement were created".

Brazil, Russia, India and China created the BRIC group in 2006 to advocate for greater representation of emerging and developing countries in international organizations. South Africa's accession in 2010 added the letter S to the acronym.
