The US today imposed sanctions on about 400 companies in Russia and several other countries, accused of aiding Russia's war effort in Ukraine and helping Moscow evade sanctions.
The effort led by the Treasury and State Departments aims to punish "third countries" that are accused of providing material assistance to the Kremlin or helping Russia evade the thousands of sanctions that have been imposed on the country since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Among those sanctioned by the Treasury Department are 275 companies accused of providing advanced technology to Russia, as well as Russian-based defense and manufacturing companies that produce or complete military products for use against Ukraine.
Additionally, the US State Department has imposed diplomatic sanctions on several senior Russian Defense Ministry officials and defense companies, a group of Chinese companies exporting dual-use goods at Russia's military-industrial base, and entities and individuals in Belarus related to President Alexander Lukashenko's regime's support of the Russian defense industry.
Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said the U.S. and its allies are "unyielding in their determination to diminish and degrade Russia's ability to equip its war machine" as well as "hinder those who seek to aid its efforts through the evasion of sanctions and export controls".
The initiative announced today is the latest in a series of thousands of US sanctions that have been imposed on Russian companies and their suppliers in other countries since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
The effectiveness of sanctions has been questioned, especially as Russia has continued to support its economy through the sale of oil and gas on international markets and even the US Government has recognized that sanctions alone cannot stop Russia's war against Russia. Ukraine.
Earlier this year, the US approved an aid package for Ukraine that allows the State Department to seize Russian state assets located in the US and use them for Kiev's benefit.
Shortly afterwards, the leaders of the countries of the group of seven richest economies agreed to design a loan of 50 billion dollars (about 48 billion euros) to help Ukraine in its fight for survival.
