Russia Protests Over Seizure of Russian Properties in Finland



Russian authorities today summoned the Finnish ambassador to the country, Marja Liivala, to protest against the seizure of Russian properties, as part of the intensification of sanctions on Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine.


The Russian Foreign Ministry indicated, in a statement, that the measure constitutes a response to the seizure of 45 properties located in Finland and belonging to Russia, including those used by the Russian embassy for official purposes and "protected by diplomatic immunity".



The Kremlin (Russian Presidency) demanded that Finland "reconsider as soon as possible this illegitimate decision", which it considers to be a "flagrant violation of the provisions of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations".


In turn, the Russian ambassador to Finland, Kuznetsov Pavel Maratovich, stressed that, if this measure is not withdrawn, the Finnish authorities will have to "assume the consequences of their actions" and threatened "retaliation".


Since the start of the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has faced numerous economic sanctions, some of which provide for the freezing of Russian assets and the confiscation of assets and their profitability, as well as the seizure of properties held in the countries of the former orbit. Soviet.


The delivery of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine, especially those on the territory of the European Union, has been a point of friction among Kiev's allies due to the risk it could bring to the international financial system.


The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24, 2022, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
