After 20 Years On The Run, Terrorist Wanted In The US Arrested In The Uk

A man wanted on terrorism charges in the United States for two bombings in the San Francisco area appeared in court in London on Tuesday after being captured after 20 years on the run.

Daniel Andreas San Diego, 46, one of the FBI's most wanted fugitives, was arrested in Wales on Monday, the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) said.

San Diego is accused in the United States of planting two bombs that exploded about an hour apart on August 28, 2003, on the campus of a biotechnology company in Emeryville, California.

He is also accused of detonating another bomb at a nutritional products company in Pleasanton, California, a month later.

The bombings did not hurt anyone, but authorities said the biotech bomb was intended to harm first responders.

"The arrest of Daniel San Diego after more than 20 years as a fugitive for two San Francisco-area bombings shows that no matter how long it takes, the FBI will find him and hold him accountable," FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement.

"There is a right way and a wrong way to express your views in our country, and resorting to violence and destruction of property is not the right way," he added.

The FBI had San Diego under surveillance when he parked his car near downtown San Francisco on Oct. 6, 2003, and disappeared into a public transit station. Federal authorities have not seen him since, although they say there have been several reported sightings around the world.

In 2009, San Diego became the first domestic terrorism suspect to be added to the FBI's Most Wanted list.

Photos of the suspect have appeared on billboards from California to Massachusetts, along the Canadian border and in Times Square. He has appeared several times on the TV show "America's Most Wanted." The FBI said San Diego worked as a computer network specialist, was a skilled sailor and was known to carry a gun.

The NCA said it arrested San Diego at a wooded property in the Conwy area of Wales, which is close to the coast. No further details were given. San Diego was remanded in custody after making his first appearance at Westminster Magistrates' Court to face extradition to the United States.
