Israel Passes Law To Fire Teachers Who Support Terrorism

The Israeli parliament (Knesset) today approved a law that allows the Education Ministry to fire teachers it deems to “support terrorism” and show “sympathy” or “solidarity” with terrorist acts perpetrated against the country.

Facilitating dismissals without prior notice, the legal framework leaves it up to the ministry to decide whether teachers “identify with terrorist acts” or have shown “sympathy or empathy for such activities.”

The legislation will allow the government to cut funding to schools that show support for attacks against Israeli citizens or targets inside the country.

The law singles out Arab schools located in East Jerusalem that are accused of “inciting minors to express anti-Israeli views,” according to local media.

The Knesset had already greenlighted a law promoted by the far-right Otzma Yehudit party that would allow Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to deport family members of convicted “terrorists” to the Gaza Strip or other areas.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs will thus be able to expel family members of those convicted of terrorism if they had prior knowledge of the terrorist acts and did not inform the police, The Times of Israel reported.

The legal framework does not only apply to Israeli citizens - whose expulsion would last between seven and 15 years - but also to permanent or temporary residents, who may receive an expulsion order, which will be valid for a period of no less than ten years and no more than 15 years.

Despite the expulsion, Israeli citizens retain their citizenship.
