US Classifies Tencent Technology as a Chinese Military Company

The US Department of Defense has classified tech giant Tencent as a military contractor, Bloomberg reports.

Tencent is primarily known for its investments in video game studios and producers, with the company owning Riot Games (‘League of Legends’ and ‘Valorant’) as well as a good portion of Epic Games and other video game producers.

The Chinese technology company told Bloomberg that the classification is “clearly a mistake” and told The Verge that it has “no impact on the company’s business.” However, Tencent will seek to remove the name from this list.

It is worth remembering that Xiaomi was also considered, in 2021, a Chinese military company. The rating was removed a few months later.
