The Chinese embassy in Mexico called on the United States to take responsibility for the fentanyl use crisis in American society and stop blaming, slandering and defaming other countries.
"We take note that recently the US Embassy in Mexico criticized on its X account the fact that fentanyl precursors in the US come from China, thus blaming another country," the Chinese diplomatic post said in a statement.
"China is one of the countries with the most restrictive and rigorously enforced anti-drug policies in the world," the same source pointed out, adding that "the fentanyl problem is a US problem."
The embassy said that "in a humanitarian spirit, China has supported the United States in its fight against the fentanyl problem" and, at the request of the US side, announced in 2019 the comprehensive classification of fentanyl-group drugs as controlled substances, the first country in the world to do so officially.
The Chinese side "has developed comprehensive anti-drug cooperation with the US and achieved remarkable results, which is obvious to all," he stressed.
"The US side should objectively and rationally view and deal with its own fentanyl problem, instead of slandering, defaming and blaming other countries," he stressed.
On February 6, the US embassy in Mexico stated on X that "90% of opioid deaths in the United States are due to fentanyl that comes through Mexico and Canada, and whose precursors come from China."
Nearly 100,000 Americans will die in 2024 from fentanyl use.
Last week, Trump announced he would postpone for a month a 25% tariff he had announced on all products coming from Canada and Mexico, following an agreement with both countries to strengthen border controls and stop fentanyl trafficking and the arrival of immigrants.
Trump, however, imposed an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods, on top of the 25% tariff that had already been in place since his first term, prompting Beijing to announce more tariffs in retaliation.
