Cape Verde to Hire 70 Cuban Doctors to Reinforce Hospitals

Cape Verde's Health Minister announced today that the country will hire 70 specialist doctors and general practitioners from Cuba, with the support of international cooperation, to reinforce central and regional hospitals.

We have already identified around 70 doctors to ensure the smooth operation of central and regional hospitals. This is the reason for my visit to Cuba, later this month, to negotiate the hiring of these professionals", said Jorge Figueiredo, during the April session, which runs until Friday.

The aim is for doctors to arrive in the country this year, and the Ministry of Health is already working with other entities to define the needs framework, taking into account the new health charter and the epidemiological and demographic profiles of the different regions.

The governor also said that, in 2024, 272 professionals were integrated, including 42 doctors, 47 nurses and 130 operational support professionals.

Jorge Figueiredo also revealed that a team of doctors from the United States is carrying out specialist consultations on eight islands in the country.

From the main hospital centers, the Agostinho Neto University Hospital (HUAN), in Praia, and the Batista de Sousa Hospital, on the island of São Vicente, the Government intends to integrate specialist doctors who are outside the system, with more than 40 years of experience, allowing them to continue providing care and maintaining a connection between the two infrastructures.

Furthermore, he guaranteed that all health departments and hospitals will have telemedicine equipment, facilitating remote monitoring of patients in areas such as cardiology, gynecology and surgery.
