Hundreds of thousands of people were left without power in western Ukraine, hundreds of kilometers from the frontline, today following a Russian airstrike on the country's power distribution facilities.
Regional authorities in Rivne said 280,000 people were without electricity and had their water supply cut off.
In the neighbouring Volyn region, 215,000 residents were without access to electricity, according to local authorities.
Russia launched a massive missile and drone strike on Ukraine early this morning, as fears grow over Moscow's intention to devastate the country's energy production capacity ahead of winter.
"Attacks on energy facilities are taking place all over Ukraine," Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko said in a post circulated on social media.
Explosions were reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, Lutsk and many other cities in central and western Ukraine.
Ukrainian presidential chief Andri Yermak said Russia had stockpiled missiles to attack Ukrainian facilities and wage war against civilians during the coldest months of the year.
“They were helped by crazy allies, including North Korea,” Yermak wrote on social media.
According to authorities, energy production and distribution infrastructure in the Lviv region of western Ukraine was hit during the attack.
The mayor of the northeastern city of Kharkov, Igor Terekhov, said the city was hit by several missiles in the early hours of today.
Ukrainian air raid alerts were also activated in the capital, Kyiv, and the Russian military struck infrastructure in the Sumi region in the northeast of the country.
